Metaphor details

Since this universe represents objects in an indirect way, a little dictionnary can be useful to grasp the fundamentals concepts.

Sonic Universe

Also known as the universe of music, where artists become stars, albums become continents and a track playing becomes a landscape hiking.

For a quick memo, what mean the astronomic terms used in SSD?

  • Sonic Universe = All music
  • Known universe = All known structural elements
  • Galaxy = Music genre or style, set of stars
  • Star = Artist or band that produces music
  • Planet = Album, called Asteroid when it contains only one track
  • Continent = Track of the album
  • Landscape = One concrete implementation of the track (for example the same track can be on two locations of the computer and have a slightly difference, giving 2 landscapes for the same continent)

Sonic Scout Driver

Shadow of a mars rover, Lem, CC0

The Sonic Scout Driver is a local tool to explore the Sonic Universe, as a spatial ship cockpit.

The main purpose is to display a different visualization of the music universe, and hopefully get an easier navigation. The system allows to play the selected continents (if the track is present on the user's file system), to annotate it and to keep track of the journey.

Specific vocabulary

  • Reachable universe = All tracks the user can play, local music (or legal stream access, but not yet implemented)
  • Ship = the vehicle used to navigate through the empty vastness
  • Pilot = the individual that says where the ship is going
  • Flag = Information set by a pilot on a landscape for him or future other pilots

(The SSD client is currently under development to follow the SAF evolution)

Supersonic Archive Fundation

Source Wikimedia Commons

The supersonic archive fundation is a shared library describing the musical universe as we know and discover it.

It has to be precised that the fundation's goal is to be independent from the copyright of any existing element, so what is shared here is not the content itself, but the metadata: titles, people, groups that generates a network of objects, allowing a deep exploration through different layers. More details about the fundation's philosophy on this page.

It is created, filled and accessible by its users. Since everyone is a potential explorer, there is no reason to limit the access to the library as a reader.

This universe reference is not absolute nor completed and will evolve at the pace of filling by the cartographers.

Specific vocabulary

  • Protostar = An individual: musician, composer, or other atomic creation unit
  • Snapshot = List of protostars in a star at a given time. A group in which people left or came will have several snapshots.
